A comprehensive Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the remediation of the former Lednez/Union Carbide site and Homebush Bay was publicly released in December 2002, before the project was approved by government authorities.

After the EIS was completed, the project’s thermal treatment process changed from indirectly-heated thermal desorption (ITD) to directly-heated thermal desorption (DTD). Additionally, a human health risk assessment has been completed since the EIS using actual project data - see the ’Health & Safety’ section of this website.
